LETTER FROM EVAN

We celebrate Co-op Week October 15-20.

This year we will be returning over $2,000,000 back to the members. Although we all have many options available to purchase products and services, I want to thank you for choosing to make those purchases locally at your Co-op. Co-operatives are a different kind of business, a local kind of business. At Co-op, community is at the heart of all we do.

Co-op week is more than a celebration of Co-operatives in Canada, it is also a celebration of the strength in our local communities. Our mission is to impact our communities, to help them grow and to thrive. We do this through building relationships with many local producers, local contractors and trades, as well as sourcing as many local products and services as we can. All of us as staff are committed to providing excellent service; service that is hard to find in the retail business.

Co-op has a history of giving to the community in a wide variety of ways. Through donations, fundraisers and other partnerships, we have again been able to give over $300,000 directly to organizations that matter to all of us, right here in our community.

Co-op is a different kind of business because the earnings of your Co-op belong to you, the members.

Thank you for Loving Local... We love it too. We truly are stronger together.

Evan Toews - Winkler Co-op General Manager

RENOVATIONS

We are renovating to serve you better! The Winkler Food Store renovation is underway. The front entrance has already been expanded and new doors have been installed. Once this is complete you will be able to pick up your shopping carts inside the entrance. This change allows more room for the deli to improve service and product selections.

While we do apologize for the inconvenience, we are excited about the changes. You are busy, so we want to offer you more options with prepared meals, and an exciting sushi and fried chicken option, prepared right in store guaranteeing the highest quality.

FUEL GOOD DAY

Fueling up at Co-op on September 18 helped raise thousands of dollars for a bike path between Morden and Winkler. On Fuel Good Day we took five cents from every litre and donated it to a major bike path project and the Plum Coulee Centre on Main. James Friesen of the Stanley Trail Association notes the 10 km bike path through the RM of Stanley connecting Morden and Winkler has been in the planning stages for more than 10 years.

"Community members have been waiting for this for a long time," he says, noting while there's no official organization behind the project, there's been significant work behind the scenes including engineering studies and support from both cities and the RM.

June Letkeman of the Plum Coulee Community Centre Committee notes the funds will provide a boost to their furnishing budget. "It's humbling, it's absolutely wonderful that they thought of us ... it's awesome Co-op is supporting us."

BLUMENFELD CREAMERY

In August we were at the The Blumenfeld Creamery learning the story behind the non-homogenized milk that this local creamery sells at Winkler & Morden Co-op grocery stores. Thank you to Dan & Helen for inviting us to their farm and telling us the story behind the milk. This milk is pasteurized at the lowest temperature that is legal in our country! This lower temperature leaves more of the valuable nutrients and enzymes in tact than a higher temperature does. By not homogenizing the milk, Blumenfeld Creamery chooses not to change the original molecular structure of the milk and cream.

This milk comes from jersey cows. Some people with a dairy intolerance find that they tolerate milk from a Jersey cow much better than other milks available.

Find Blumenfeld Creamery milk at Winkler & Morden Co-op Food Stores.

THIS IS OUR TOWN

Winkler-Morden Co-op is celebrating the small towns and villages that surround Winkler & Morden. Co-op now carries trendy t-shirts for places like Schoenwiese, Roland, Schanzenfeld, and Plum Coulee to name a few. These t-shirts are available at the Co-op Truck Stop between Winkler & Morden on highway 14.

Congrats to a few of our contest winners who helped design the shirts: Jenn Elias,Ty lbbitson and Sara Wall. If you have any ideas for future t-shirts, please let us know!! We hope to add to the collection.
