Fuel Up To Win Grand Prize Winner in MordenActions
For eight weeks this spring, people from across Canada were trying to cash in on some prizes through Co-op's 2018 Fuel up to Win contest, including the $100,000 grand prize.
Tuesday, May 15th, 2018 the winner was announced, and it was a couple from Morden. Scott and Erin Chapman collected all seven game stickers needed, which included the elusive Elm Creek sticker.
When Erin Chapman called her husband Scott home from the rink on a Friday night in April, he initially thought there was something wrong.
“I said that I thought we won the $100,000, and he looked at me like he wasn’t sure if I was pulling his leg,” Erin recalled.
"It was so exciting and so surreal," said Erin when she realized they had won the $100,000 grand prize. “It’s pretty crazy to think that there was only one of that rare ticket and we got it... I might have done a little dance."
The Chapmans say they plan to use the money to pay down their mortgage.
Winkler-Morden Co-op Marketing Coordinator Connie Bailey said they were thrilled to learn the grand prize winner for all of Canada was from Morden. "Co-op has 180 independent retail Co-ops across western Canada, there are 1.9 million members, and there are 1,500 locations, so out of all those people, we got the winner." She noted that number doesn't even reflect the non-members who participated.
Meanwhile, as part of the contest, Co-op also gave away another $25,000 at a celebration in Morden.
The cities of Winkler and Morden each received $2,500 for community bike racks, and South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR) was presented with a cheque for $20,000.
"It's absolutely wonderful that they (Co-op) are giving us this great gift, and being so generous," said SCCR Board President June Letkeman.
Letkeman says the $20,000 is a huge deal and a very timely gift. "This year already, our transportation budget is over budget, probably by about $20,000."
